In light of all the wedding planning that is frantically occurring at this time of year I thought I’d tell you my top 10 things that I believe makes your drinks reception the best it can be.
So, get granny’s head out of the bunting, put down the scissors and for the next 60 seconds enjoy some seriously thought provoking and fun ways to make your drinks reception the talk of the town.
The Drinks Reception Top 10
1. Music.
I’d always choose to avoid a band at this point and go for something softer, allowing people to meet for the first time, have a good old natter and generally catch up at your drinks reception. Acoustic artists, harpists or saxophonists are great and can add that missing something to an otherwise silent room.
The incredible ‘Dax on Sax’ of Six15 rocking a drinks reception
2. Nibbles.
I must clarify I’m not talking about 2 bowls of Wotsit’s and a chicken drumstick. We’re not wanting to start a war. Elegant canapes served by waiting staff are lovely however try to avoid anything greasy or messy. Lots of your guests may have been awake a while and a little bit of food here can raise their energy levels seeing them through the drinks reception with ease!
3. Entertainment.
Consider this 2 hour period, your drinks reception, as a waiting game for your guests. They’re hungry, out of things to talk about in 10 minutes and restless. A strolling close up magician (like me) are great at breaking the ice, firing up enthusiasm and bringing laughter into the room. To quote one of my brides… “The room was electric!” Thanks Lis!
4. Drinks.
I’ve always found a selection to be better than having a glass of champagne thrust into my hand and after seeing numerous guests pour their fizz into a plant I’m not alone. Champagne, Bucks fizz, orange juice as well as Pimm’s during the summer makes for a more friendly welcome to your drinks reception.
5. Use you Venue wisely.
Just because it’s summer it doesn’t mean it’s warm. Be wary of the UK weather and plan an indoor drinks reception if you’re not 100% certain it’ll be wind and cloud free. Likewise, some like it hot, others don’t. A balance between the two is great and I’ve found indoor venues with lots of light, big windows / french doors to give you the best of both worlds allowing your guests to roam.
6. Photographs.
During your drinks reception is when photographs usually happen as you’re just married and it’s super exciting! Your photographer will whisk you away for a little while to get those all important family and friends shots leaving your guests who aren’t so involved a little lost. That’s where entertainment (like me) comes in! Enjoy your photographs, they’re really special, don’t get self conscious, remember it’s your day, you’re in control!
7. Table Plans.
Some venues have a habit of revealing these 10 minutes before dinner. Bad idea! Make sure it’s available to view throughout your drinks reception. You’re guests will be able to find out where they’re sat for dinner (which remember they are craving like mad!) making the transition from your drinks reception to wedding breakfast as seamless and stress-free as possible. Just what we want!
Beautiful & functional. by Harriet
8. Strolling Photographer. (Reportage style)
Eh? Well, I like them. A lot. As one photographer is snapping you and your family, a second photographer (that most chosen photographers will be able to arrange) floats inconspicuously around your drinks reception getting natural, un-posed shots of your guests. I can only see this idea getting more and more popular!
9. A Surprise.
By that I don’t mean a girl in a birthday cake or a ‘sexy’ fireman (but it could work)! Be creative! You’re guests will really appreciate that something they didn’t expect. It could be stilt walkers to greet guests, a magician to wow their socks off, fire dancers, caricaturist or bar flarer who juggles their drinks! It’s the personal touches that make your drinks reception and your big day unique so get that thinking cap on!
10. Get Involved.
Like I mentioned above your photographer will want to get your ‘formal’ shots but don’t over do it. Careful planning with your photographer will make this process quicker. Take the shots you really really want and then go and enjoy yourself. It’s your drinks reception, your party and all of your guests want to see you because…
Today you’re the star of the show so take your much earned bow!
Well that’s it, my top 10 golden beautiful must do ways to have an amazing wedding / drinks reception. I hope it’s given you some ideas and maybe even inspiration when planning your big day :) I hope to see you there!
Thanks for reading and comments, likes, shares & tweets are greatly appreciated!

Nunsmere Hall Wedding Magician

Long before our Nunsmere Hall Wedding… We were on holiday on the Amalfi Coast and unbeknown to me, Tom had been working with an events planner for weeks leading up to the holiday! Tom told me that he had booked us a table at a nice restaurant further down the coast and that the restaurant supplied a private boat to collect the guests (That was a lie! He had arranged for a speed boat to collect us especially!)
Upon arriving at the restaurant, which is built into a 13th century Norman tower, I could see a small gathering of people waiting, including a photographer, to greet us – I felt like a celebrity! On the side of the tower, there was a private dining table set with the most beautiful table decorations, flowers and candles and honestly one of the best views I have ever seen. At this point, I knew something was going on!
“There was a private dining table set with the most beautiful table decorations, flowers & candles and honestly one of the best views I have ever seen. At this point, I knew something was going on!”
Tom told me that the restaurant had asked if they could take photos to be used for promotional purposes on their website to try and explain why there was a man taking photos of us! [He’s a smart guy!] We then ate the most amazing 8 course meal whilst being serenaded by our own Italian guitar player. It was heaven.
Towards the end of the meal, Tom had gone off to the ”toilet” and I was asked if I would like to come and choose a dessert inside the restaurant. As I walked through the main dining area (which was full of guests) I walked down some stairs to be greeted by Tom on one knee next to a huge arrangement of petals and candles with the words ‘Will you marry me?’ I was totally blown away! All the other diners started cheering and clapping! It was an incredible moment which I will never forget :) [What a legend!]
“We can’t wait for the whole day & spending it with all our family and friends!”
We chose a Nunsmere Hall wedding because it was love at first sight! As soon as we walked through the doors we just knew that this was the place. We loved the grounds, the marquee and especially the fact that we could exclusively hire the whole hotel so that only our guests would be staying there.
“We wanted to add something to our day that would excite our guests and make it a day to remember!”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
I saw Sam on Facebook and read some reviews – he sounded amazing and after having a chat we just knew that we had to have him at our Nunsmere Hall wedding!
From the moment Vicky & Tom got in touch I just knew they were my kind of people… And their Nunsmere Hall wedding was an absolute blast. Finding the right balance of relaxed wedding vibes with booking awesome wedding suppliers the whole day ran super smooth.
It was great to work with a whole host of amazing wedding suppliers and perform for such lovely guests, family & friends of Tom & Vicky at their Nunsmere Hall wedding.
A massive congratulations to Vicky & Tom, you absolute beauts! Enjoy the honeymoon!

It all happened in Mexico whilst holidaying with close friends and my Sister. Dax had decided to upgrade our room to a luxury suite after pretending he wasn’t happy with our original room, and asked my Daughter (Amelia) and I to come and check it out.
When I got up there I was surprised to see that the suite was out of this world. Dax pulled back the double doors into the bedroom to reveal scattered rose petals and a huge flower arrangement laid on the bed. Around the bath tub were delicately placed candles and even more rose petals.
I turned around to find Dax down on one knee. He handed me a glass of Moet. There in the bottom of the glass was the beautiful ring!
“Dax asked me to marry him and whilst standing there in my Bikini, barefoot and completely shocked, surprised and overwhelmed, I said Yes!”
I’d always wanted a church wedding and have my Dad walk me down the isle. I fell in love with All Hallows Church as it makes the hairs on my arms stand on end when I enter. We’d been guests at a Mitton Hall wedding before and had a great time. Mitton Hall is such a fab venue, the setting is beautiful and the food and staff are also amazing! [Good call on the food Andrea!]
“Quite simply we want our guests to remember it for being unique and like nothing they’ve seen before. I want to see people laughing and having enjoying themselves.”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
I found Mitton hall wedding magician Sam through social media. I loved the feedback on his page and was really impressed with his magic. I loved the way he performs so unexpectedly and naturally blends in. I think he’ll make the perfect impression on our guests!
It’s been so lovely to be part of Andrea & Dax’s Mitton Hall wedding. I’m a frequent visitor to Mitton Hall weddings however today’s really was so much fun! Andrea and Dax have such a fun and optimistic outlook and the atmosphere come the nighttime was electric! A Mitton Hall wedding focused on laughter, fun and celebration!
A massive congratulations to Andrea & Dax, but please you two, NEVER EVER CHANGE. You’re awesome!

Peckforton Castle Magician – Sam Fitton

We’re a very traditional, English couple – lots of people say we are like a modern day Lord and Lady! Hannah is really in to afternoon tea and has a large collection of tea cups and tea pots so for our first Valentines Day together I bought her afternoon tea at The Ritz in London. We absolutely loved it, so I thought that would be a perfect place for the proposal! Back in May last year I bought her a night at The Ritz with dinner and disguised it as an anniversary present! We went on the 26th October and when we got to the room I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. It was the perfect setting, but about five minutes later when I was telling Hannah about buying the ring etc. a maintenance guy knocked on the door asking if he could change the time on one of the clocks in the room?! Not the best timing, but adds some comedy to the story I suppose.
“It was the perfect setting, but about five minutes later when I was telling Hannah about buying the ring etc. a maintenance guy knocked on the door asking if he could change the time on one of the clocks in the room?! Random.”
As we are a very traditional couple and love all things British! We love watching Downton Abbey together and knew that we wanted to get married somewhere similar to that. Somewhere that was grand and had character. We went to Peckforton Castle for a spa day last year and were blown away with how special it felt. As soon as we got engaged, it was the first place we booked to see as a potential venue. Funnily enough, they only had 1 date available for this Summer (29.7.26) and it tied in perfectly with Hannah’s school holiday so we knew it was meant to be.
“We just want a day full of laughter, entertainment and be memorable for all our guests”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
We thought a Peckforton Castle magician would be great entertainment for our guests during the drinks reception, which can sometimes be a bit of a lull.
Hannah actually got in touch with Sam even before booking the photographer, finding her dress or any other very important parts of planning a wedding! After sorting out other things we got back in touch with Manchester magician Sam in February and booked him for our Wedding. We found Sam through the The Wedding Industry Awards site and knew he would be perfect at our drinks reception entertainment.
It’s been awesome to be part of Hannah & Ben’s wedding at Peckforton Castle. This is one of those magical venues that never ceases to amaze me and for Hannah and Ben it provided that quintessentially British backdrop for their dream wedding. Thanks so much to the happy couple and to the guests for making this a truly fun (and hilarious ;) ) day for this Peckforton Castle magician!
A massive congratulations to Hannah & Ben, I wish them both all the very best for the future!

Inn on the Lake Magician – Sam Fitton

Jonathon (that’s me typing) coaxed Pam in to repeating an argument that we had a year previous in exactly the same place – ( A pub called the Travellers Rest in South Wales on 12 October 2014. I got her to grill me hard on how I take too much time to make any serious decisions (generally speaking I’ll leave the serious stuff to other people and enjoy myself). So I let her blood pressure build to the point where; predictably, she would tell me, and I quote, “I was having a go at you (last time we were here) for taking forever to make your mind up and make a decision”. To which I butted right in with, “Well I thought about this one…” I pulled the ring out of my pocket that I had been frantically guarding all day). “Will you marry me?”
“After what felt like 10 minutes of silence, she nodded ‘Yes’ and cried… A lot… Hugged me.. Said ‘Yes’ and cried some more!”
Jonathon wanted Bora Bora (as mentioned below). Pamela wanted a family occasion. We wanted a location that could compromise for both families travel distance. Unfortunately after 6+ months of searching we only found venues in the region (Gloucestershire/Worcestershire/Monmouthshire/Cheshire) that suited which either cost the price of a semi detached or wanted the cost of a semi detached just for the privilege of being the only wedding present on the day. We didn’t want to be part of a conveyor-belt. We wanted an outdoor family gathering with a backdrop. The Inn on the Lake in Cumbria reared its head 3 times in as many days and ticked all of our boxes.
“Pamela wanted a party. She is a social menace. She wanted a weekend of music and magic. Or to quote our friend Liz – “Magiciary.”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
Pamela went hunting after we saw a magician at a wedding fair in Cheltenham. She found the National Wedding Industry Awards and checked out Sam’s website & video.. She came home ecstatic about this amazing magician and how we just had to book him!
She picked up Sam’s passion for magic and making people happy and she said Sam spoke as if he were ‘a best friend’. That he wasn’t just trying to sell a product and take peoples money. Sam genuinely spoke as if he was an old friend and everything clicked. We have had our fair share of transactional relationships with people whilst wedding hunting, so Sam was a very very welcome breath of fresh air!!
From the first phone call with Pam & Jonathon I knew I wanted to be be a part of their wedding. I could tell it was going to be fun, lively and set to that stunning lake district backdrop. A big thank you to all of their guests for being on top form and having a right good bit of fun with me! It’s been an absolute pleasure to be a an Inn on the Lake magician today and be part of such a spectacular day.
A massive congratulations to Pam & Jonathon, I wish them both all the very best for the future!

Inn at Whitewell Magician – Sam Fitton

Lauren told me that her dream proposal was a Tiffany ring on a horse drawn carriage in New York Central Park in the snow. I took her to New York for her 30th Birthday.
The day before her birthday we ended up going on the horse drawn carriage around Central Park but I didn’t think it was right, the smell of horse and the carriage driver didn’t really do it for me, I couldn’t do it. After that we then had a walk around and I spotted the little row boats out on the Lake, so we got one of those.
“While she was distracted I got the ring out and got down on one knee in the boat, trying ever so hard not to rock the boat and capsize us!”
I rowed us out into the middle of the Lake and said I was going to get my camera out and take some pictures, I got the camera out of my bag and gave it to her and asked her to take some pictures while I put the case etc back in the bag. While she was distracted I got the ring out and got down on one knee in the boat, trying ever so hard not to rock the boat and capsize us, I said ‘Lauren, I know its not on the horse drawn carriage and its not snowing but will you marry?’ of course she said yes, after that we went to the boat house, got a bottle of champagne and called the parents.
“We went to look at the Inn at Whitewell as our first stop and instantly both fell in love with it”
Being a keen cyclist I have spent a lot of time riding around the Trough of Bowland and always loved the Inn at Whitewell. having seen several weddings there over the years while out and about I’ve always thought to myself that I’d like to get married there.
When we started planning our wedding we had a list of venues to check out and both liked the Inn at Whitewell so put that as our first venue to view. We went to look at the Inn at Whitewell as our first stop and instantly both fell in love with it, the venue, the setting, the food, everything was perfect, and just like that the venue was decided.
“Above all else we just want to have lots of laughter and fun at our wedding.”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
We both love magic and the idea of of an Inn at Whitewell magician sounded like a lot of fun! Sam also came highly recommended to us by our photographer, James Jebson.
It’s been incredible to be part of Lauren & Dave’s wedding journey at the Inn at Whitewell. Not only was I the Inn at Whitewell magician but I also MC’d / hosted their speeches and had the real honour of announcing Lauren & David into the wedding breakfast as the new Mr & Mrs Bainbridge!
I’m so happy for such a wonderful couple and wish them all the very best for the future.

Styal Lodge Magician – Sam Fitton
[wp_social_sharing social_options=’facebook,twitter,googleplus’ twitter_username=’samfittonmagic’ facebook_text=’Share on Facebook’ twitter_text=’Share on Twitter’ googleplus_text=’Share on Google+’ linkedin_text=’Share on Linkedin’ pinterest_text=”Share on Pinterest” xing_text=”Share on Xing” icon_order=’f,t,g,l,p,x’ show_icons=’1′ before_button_text=” text_position=” social_image=”]
Alex proposed at Dunham Massey. The day started off strangely as it was a Saturday and Alex wasn’t working which immediately sent off some warning bells (running his own plumbing business he works most weekends). Alex nipped out in the morning because he had “things” he needed to do… He in actual fact was putting together a picnic but Alex being Alex and always very last minute didn’t even have a picnic basket or anything to put the food in!
He arrived back at about half 10 ish and we set off for a day out to Dunham Massey. Before we left he gave me a rose with some soppy words on it. Unfortunately, and probably with nerves, Alex typed the wrong post code in the sat nav and we ended up lost in some back streets of Didsbury behind a row of terraced houses. I had to step in and we managed to navigate to Dunham Massey.
“Probably with nerves, Alex typed the wrong post code into the SatNav and we ended up lost in the back streets of Didsbury.”
We arrived and he pulled out his second rose again with another soppy note. We entered Dunham Massey after ending up signing up to the National Trust and both becoming members for a year (it seemed like the longest process EVER!).
We had a bit of a walk and then entered the rose garden which is where I had psyched myself up that if he was going to do it, it would be here. Anyhow we walked round … and round… and round it and then left!
With me being somewhat deflated but this point we sat down to have our picnic with Alex encouraging me to eat more sandwiches and pork pie every 2 secs! Finally when I couldn’t eat any more he asked me whether I loved him (blerg ! haha) and whether I wanted to spend our life together ( I obviously said yes) he then gave me the third and final rose which said, “Will you marry me?” He then was down on one knee asked me with the ring. I cried, the ring fell in the grass and that was that! :D
“He then gave me the third and final rose which said, “Will you marry me?”
We decided to book Styal Lodge as we wanted somewhere light and airy that was big enough for all our family and friends. Styal Lodge ticked the box! There was other good things such as a big dance floor, easy access to the toilets, a pretty garden, a sound system, all in one place rather than different rooms and a projector.
“Quite simply we want our guests to experience an amazing and memorable day!”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
We wanted someone to look after our guests at the reception whilst we were away having photographs or talking to other guests. We didn’t want our guests bored and wanted some form of entertainment. Styal Lodge magician Sam seemed like the perfect touch to keep our guests occupied and entertained ! Instead of waiting in a line whilst we tried to get round to speak to everyone.
We actually saw Sam on a blog and I can’t remember for the life of me where but somewhere online and I was really impressed. After doing more research Sam had amazing reviews and we knew we couldn’t go wrong! We had a great drink in town and Sam seemed to really “get” us :)
When I first met Louise & Alex at the Alchemist in Manchester I knew they were going to be my kind of couple. Fun, relaxed and up for a right good laugh! And their wedding was just that! As a Styal Lodge magician it’s been an absolute pleasure to be part of their day and I wish them both all the very best for the future!

Wedstival 2016 @ Capesthorne Hall
If you’re planning your wedding then you’ll no doubt have visited plenty of wedding fairs (I have one couple who have been to almost 50 of them!!) IT’s an opportunity to wonder around a venue and pick up a few leaflets from other wedding suppliers. But not Wedstival. Wedstival is not like other wedding fairs.
In fact, even calling it a ‘wedding fair’ seems a little, well, wrong. It’s much more than that. Imagine if you could take all the best bits of a wedding fair (like the cake samples, awesome suppliers, amazing displays, creative ideas & wedding inspiration) and combine it with the fun and vibrance of a music festival. The constant live music, funky mobile food vendors, an inflatable pub (yes gents, an inflatable pub!) and you’re half way to describing the vibe of Wedstival.
I’m going to put this out there. I’ve never really liked wedding fairs (eesh, did I type that out loud?). What I love is meeting new people, showing them amazing magic, meeting other creative professionals in the wedding industry and having the opportunity to talk through a couple’s plans for their wedding. And that’s why I loved Wedstival. It gives couples the opportunity (in a less pressure driven environment than most wedding fairs) to talk to suppliers casually whilst being entertained.
It was quite clear to the exhibiting wedding pro’s that visitors to Wedstival were having just as much fun as us. And that’s fantastic because in my opinion that’s what weddings are all about. The free flowing nature of the event allowed visitors to dip and dive between 2 marquees, a mega Tipi and Capesthorne Hall itself whilst enjoying the sunshine (and the occasional downpour). But even the sporadic wet weather couldn’t dampen spirits!
“It was quite clear to the exhibiting wedding pro’s that visitors to Wedstival were having just as much fun as us!”
Wedstival has raised the bar in what a ‘wedding fair’ can be. And I’d bet my magic wand* that everyone that came along had an amazing time. Whether Brides Up North intended it or not, it’s apparent that with Wedstival’s overwhelming success they have created a new genre of wedding planning event.
A massive congratulations to the Brides Up North team for hosting a fantastic event. I’m sure this is only the start!

We went out for a surprise meal for Jools birthday to which I invited all the family. I purchased a cheap ring from argos as I knew Jools would like to pick her own and I attached a key ring to it saying ‘I.O.U one engagement ring.’ I got Jools’ neice in on the proposal by getting her to put the ring on the table and so when Jools noticed the ring I was down on one knee by her side. Thankfully Jools said yes and the next day we went looking for the perfect ring.
“… I attached a key ring to it saying ‘I.O.U one engagement ring.'”
We wanted something amazing for our guest to enjoy and Villa magician Sam fits the bill down to a tea. We used to be colleagues in the police and through a little bit of Facebook stalking realised that he is now a leader in his field and only the best will do for our wedding!
“Quite simply we want our guests have as much fun as possible. “
It’s been great to be part of Ben & Julia’s wedding at The Villa Wrea Green. I first met Ben when we trained together in the Police so for him to remember me all these years later is really flattering! Such a lovely couple with fantastic friends and family who made the whole day truly magical for this villa magician!
A massive congratulations to Ben & Julia, I wish them all the best and a lovely time in mexico on honeymoon!

Brockholes Magician – Sam Fitton

Adam proposed on the balcony to our hotel room when we were on holiday in Malta. I had done my best to try and ruin the surprise from opening his hand luggage to searching through all the drawers in the hotel room looking for something I’d lost, I even made him watch a world cup match on the evening he was originally planning on proposing on!
“I had tried my best to ruin the surprise.. by looking for something I’d lost!”
Brockholes Nature Reserve is different to the usual wedding venue, it’s a nature reserve! Hopefully the weather will be on our side and we’ll get to enjoy the beautiful setting outside. [Although forecast for heavy storms, the weather held and Brockoles was bathed in sunshine and warm temperatures for the entire day!]
“Quite simply we want our guests to experience something memorable and fun!”
Why did you decide to book Sam & how did you find him?
We wanted Sam [Brockholes magician today] to provide some fun entertainment for our guests and hopefully find out the secret to some of your tricks!
We booked Sam quite a long time ago now we think he was a recommendation from our photographer James Jebson. Then when we met Sam for drinks we knew he would be the perfect magician to entertain our guests.
It’s been so lovely to be part of Sarah & Adam’s wedding at Brockholes nature reserve. This wedding was a long time in the making and with such a different, natural spin to the day with it being set in the grounds of a nature reserve! I’d never been a Brockholes magician before but I really did enjoy myself, with such fun guests, a different style of venue and a beautiful bride and groom it really was a day to remember!
A massive congratulations to Sarah & Adam, I wish them both the very best for the future!
